PART I
For once in my life, I’ve found the one thing that made me… well… not cry. This is it, I told my mother, the one thing that would always make our lives a little less painful.
“Caryn, bring the trash outside. I won’t ask you again.” But I was wrong. Our life turned out for the worst because, as you can see, someone else is in charge. A different mother at that. This isn’t a fairytale and not even close to Cinderella. This is about a girl named, Caryn Moretti. I was born as the only child of the last line of the Moretti family. My father died in an accident that my mother and I barely escaped and my mother from a fatal illness. Before all that happened my mother remarried. THAT was supposed to be the one thing that would make our lives better. But when my mother died 2 years after the marriage, I realized, my life was never going to be better. My step-father decided to remarry when I turned 17, 5 years after my mother died. She is now my step-mom… one I wish wasn’t.
“CARYN!” Storming out of her room for the first time today, Lady Kristina Ricci made sure I remembered my place in this family. I was neither her daughter nor Brenton’s -my step-dad.
“I’m sorry, Kristina.” I said icily. “I didn’t know I was a maid.” It hasn’t been a year and therefore, I almost doubted she’d get any further than this. She came forward quicker than my eyes could follow. I felt her strongly brush against my cheek. Great, another bruise.
“Don’t speak to me like that.” She turned away, I had hoped that this was it but I knew better. “Bren!” She screamed out, her voice cracking and I could feel her pretending to cry. “Bren…” She was meek now, voice soft and body weak.
“Kris, are you okay?” He rushed to her and glanced at me. “Caryn.” His voice stern. He didn’t know who to believe and his attention wavered. My eyes were strong, I made sure not to lose this one.
